Oscars Beauty 2011: Marisa Tomei

For Marisa Tomei's gorgeous red carpet look, makeup artist Matthew VanLeeuwen worked exclusively with Anastasia Beverly Hills product.

Matthew took the Anastasia Highlighting Crème Duo in St Tropez dipped into the crème blush and applied it in gentle back and forth sweeps across Marisa's smiling cheeks. (Pro tip: smiling makes the job mistake proof, because it helps the blush go where it's supposed to). Using the same brush, Matthew dipped into the highlighting crème and brushed the tops of the lips and nose with the illuminating fluid. The skin was "so translucent and smooth looking!"

Turning to brows, Matthew filled and shaped Marisa's with Anastasia Brow Wiz Pencil in Brunette and created a few feathery strokes in the brow and to define the bottom edge of the brow. Matthew then took Anastasia Brow Duality Pencil and placed a bit of the matte highlighter just at the arch of the brow. The total effect is ultra defined and crisp brows that perfectly frame the face.

Moving to the eyes, Matthew took Anastasia Illumin8 Eye Shadow Palette 1 and dusted the soft pink sorbet shadow all over the eye to brighten and tone the skin. Matthew raved that "the shadow is so smoothing and imparts a modern velvety texture." Then Matthew took Illumin8 palette 3 and blended the mauve shade into the crease "to create the perfect shade of orchid." Next, Matthew lined the eye with a thin line of black pencil and smudged the sparkly blue/black shadow from Illumin8 palette #3 into the lashline to create a softer, smokey eyeline.

The eye makeup was finished by curling the lashes and applying two coats of Anastasia Lash Lifting Mascara, which Matthew says "has reached cult status with many of my clients...it's incredible."

Finally to finish Marisa's stunning look, Matthew applied Anastasia Hydrafull Lip Gloss in Sangria, a gorgeous soft amethyst berry shade.

NARS Illuminators!

Every time I apply foundation or tinted moisturizer, I mix in a little NARS Orgasm Illuminator - without fail. It takes my complexion to a whole nuther level...which is why I am positively giddy that NARS just added three new shades to the Illuminator family.

COPACABANA - Like its namesake Multiple, Copacabana Illuminator will impart a pearlescent sheen and can be applied all over the face, mixed with foundation, and used to highlight the neck, shoulders and décolleté.

SUPER ORGASM – Infused, like the blush, with golden shimmer and a peachy-gold hue that can be applied all over the face, mixed with foundation, and used to highlight the neck, shoulders and décolleté.

LAGUNA - A golden-bronze hue, just as in Laguna Bronzer, that will give a sun-kissed glow and can be applied to the face or mixed with foundation.

This collection of light-reflecting liquids glides on to refresh the skin, enhance the complexion and create a shimmering incandescence. The Illuminators can be used to highlight bare skin or to light up your makeup as it lights the skin from within.

Key ingredients include:
• Polar Berries, known for their antioxidant properties
• Bisabolol, known as an anti-inflammatory (obtained from the Chamomile plant)
• Indian Frankincense, known for its soothing and comforting properties
• Vitamin B5 to, known to condition skin
• Sodium Hyaluronate, known to hydrate skin

Peep My Polish: OPI Lucene-tainly Look Marvelous

These days, most of the time I have my hands full with Westley - who recently turned 6-months old! Anyway, last week, I had a rare opportunity to get a manicure. I got out of work early and my fabulous co-worker, Alyssa, and I got our nails did.

I decided on OPI Lucerne-tainly Look Marvelous (from the Swiss Collection). It's a stunning pewter shade that almost takes on a blueish cast in the light.

Alyssa also opted for OPI. I can't recall the name, though...but isn't it glitterrific?

Jennifer Aniston Cuts Her Hair

Jennifer Aniston debuted a new do while promoting her new comedy "Just Go With It" in Madrid. I love a lob (long bob) - as you can tell from my updated Twitter avatar...it's my signature style. But I'm not digging it on Jen. Is it just me or does it make her look older? She looks tired, right? Perhaps the the lighter blond is washing her out a bit. I think a little lipstick would have helped to sell me on this new look.

I've heard time and time again that "women of a certain age" should wear their hair shorter...well, if this doesn't disprove that myth, I don't know what does.

This haircut probably seemed like a fun idea at the time, but I predict that Jen will soon regret it (kinda like her fling with John Douchebag Mayer).

What do you think? Does Jen's new cut make the cut?

Mila Kunis to play Wicked Witch?

Actress Mila Kunis is in talks to play the Wicked Witch of the West in new movie "Oz, The Great and Powerful".

Kunis met with director Sam Raimi and actor James Franco - who is set to appear as the Wizard of Oz' - and all agreed she would be perfect for the role as Dorothy's nemesis Theodorah, reports contactmusic.

The film talks about an unscrupulous showman on the run from an angry husband after romancing the man's wife.

He escapes in a hot air balloon and is swept away to the magical land of Oz, where he falls in love with Glinda, the Good Witch of the North.

Mila Kunis in 'Oz, The Great and Powerful'

Fresh off her critically acclaimed role in the Oscar nominated 'Black Swan', actress Mila Kunis has landed the part of Wicked Witch in 'Oz, The Great and Powerful', a remake of 1939 classic 'The Wizard of Oz'.
The 27-year-old actress was in talks to play the part of Theodorah, the younger sister of Evanorah, who goes on to become the witch, in the Disney movie.

After a meeting, director Sam Raimi and actor James Franco, who will appear as the Wizard of Oz, were convinced of her being perfect for the role as Dorothy's nemesis, reported Contactmusic.

Writer David Lindsay-Abaire, famous for his play 'Rabbit Hole' has written the script and with Oscar nominated Franco in the lead, the new film is a sort of a prequel the Judy Garland movie and depict how the Wizard arrived in Oz and became the ruler.

The film is likely to go on the floors in July.

“I Will Never Dance Again”

She lost 20 pounds, tore a ligament, dislocated a shoulder and trained for several months. But when Mila Kunis, star of Black Swan, recalls her injuries she quickly adds, “And it was worth every minute.”

In a recent interview with W Magazine (via The Huffington Post), the edgy ballerina says training for the movie resulted in several bruises. She recalls, “I had never danced in my life. I trained for four months, seven days a week, five hours a day. I had one day off on my birthday.”

Although she admits it was worth every minute, she adds,”But I will never dance again. I’m a strong believer in mind over matter, but I didn’t fully understand what that meant until this production.”

Mila Kunis poses in pink bra for mag cover

The magazine chose the actress to be the cover girl for its Spring Fashion edition, reports the New York Daily News.

Kunis appears clad in a pink silk Eres bra and a sheer, black Chanel jacket with sleeves that resemble a swan''s feathers.

Plumage is also featured inside the magazine, where the 27-year-old poses in a Nina Ricci dress made with ostrich feathers.
In all of the artful shots, Kunis'' sense of poise and grace – two traits she had to master while portraying a ballerina in the Oscar-nominated film – are strikingly evident.

Mila Kunis screamed for 'Black Swan' role

Mila Kunis, who was nominated for a Golden Globe and a SAG award for her work in “Black Swan,” put up with some major pain for the role as a ballerina.

In the March issue of W, Kunis says the training for the movie was torturous.

“I lost 20 pounds. I tore a ligament. I dislocated my shoulder. I have two scars on my back.”

Not to mention those shoes.
“I was like, Well — I wear heels; I can do this. I was wrong: Christian Louboutins are uncomfortable, but I screamed the first time I put on a pointe shoe,” Kunis said.

Kunis was snubbed by the Oscars, but we’re hoping to see her in a nice pair of flats on the red carpet anyway.

Why Mila Kunis would never dance Again!

Mila Kunis would think twice before she would even attempt to dance! Reason being the actress has gone through enough pain already while shooting for Oscar nominated 'Black Swan'.

Mila lost 20 pounds, tore a ligament, dislocated a shoulder and trained for several months while shooting Black Swan. She although adds, "And it was worth every minute."
In a chat with TOI, the actress recalled, "I had never danced in my life. I trained for four months, seven days a week, five hours a day. I had one day off on my birthday. But I will never dance again. I'm a strong believer in mind over matter, but I didn't fully understand what that meant until this production."

Mila Kunis Chooses OZ over Akira

Despite losing out on an Oscar nomination, Mila Kunis remains a hot Hollywood commodity after the success of Black Swan. The actress has dropped out of a planned live action remake of Akira and signed on to play Theodorah, otherwise known as The Wicked Witch of the West in Oz, the Great and Powerful.

The film, to be directed by Sam Raimi, is a prequel to The Wizard of Oz. It will follow the titular character (to be played by James Franco) and the witches of Oz before Dorothy Gale’s house lands on Theodorah’s older sister, Evanorah. The script was written by David Lindsay-Abaire (Inkheart).
Kunis’ departure from Akira, which was to be produced and directed by the Hughes brothers (Book of Eli), is the third high-profile loss the project has suffered. Brad Pitt was offered the lead role of Kaneda but he turned it down. Interestingly, James Franco also passed on the part. Harry Potter screenwriter Steve Kloves is writing the script

Mila Kunis talks about coming to America

Mila Kunis was 7 when she and her parents moved to Los Angeles from Ukraine.

And what was the first thing she remembers seeing of America?

"A black man," she says in the new issue of W magazine. "It was at the American embassy, and all I had known were Caucasian people with blond hair, brunette hair, and sometimes red hair. You're never really taught about anything else. I think I was frightened. And the beautiful thing was, the man spoke Russian. He explained to me that there are people in this world who are of different color. Being seven and a half, I asked him, 'Does that mean there are purple people in this world?'"
She did not grow up being told she was beautiful.

"It's not that I was raised to think I was unattractive, but it was just never something that was pointed out to me by my family. They would point out personality traits—'Our daughter is really quirky'—versus what I look like, because inevitably, looks go, so it makes no difference."

And she always thought college was her career goal.

"I didn't really think of acting as a career. I'm the first person in my family to not be a college graduate. I always associate careers with college diplomas. When I was 22, my contract with That '70s Show ended, and I had to make a conscious decision about what I wanted to do with my life.

"During the show, I had attempted to go to college, but I realized that the traffic in L.A. made it too difficult for me to go to school at 6 a.m. and be back at work at 10 a.m. I asked my parents if it was okay if I dropped out. They said okay, you can defer until after your contract with That '70s Show ends. And then it ended.

"I realized for the first time that I couldn't imagine doing anything else. So I had to make acting a career— to make smart choices instead of choices made for fun."

Actress Mila Kunis bullied at school

Actress Mila Kunis was bullied at school for her looks.

The stunning 'Black Swan' actress hated her big eyes and lips when she was younger after being taunted by her classmates but says she is now happy she has finally grown into her strong features.

She said: "I was always the smallest in my class. I've learned it wasn't a bad thing to be picked on because when you're little it seems awful like it's the end of the world.
"I grew into my face. I had a very funny looking face when I was little. I had like big eyes, big lips, big ears.

"But when I was little I was constantly being made fun of for having big eyes and that was awful. I used to come home crying: 'Why do I have big eyes?' And my parents were like: 'You're crazy!'"

However being bullied at school has not put Mila off education forever and the 27-year-old beauty is now planning to follow in her 'Black Swan' co-star Natalie Portman's footsteps and attend university.

She told Britain's OK! magazine: "I will go to university one day. I wanted to, it's just I chose a career from an early age. Who's to say I made the right decision? I don't know. Time will tell."

Mila Kunis Used to Be Fugly

It's hard to believe someone as gorgeous as Mila Kunis could have ever been an ugly duckling, but apparently she was.

Mila, who is known for her sultry eyes and gorgeous pout, says she was really awkward looking as a kid.

She told OK magazine: "I had a very funny-looking face when I was little. I had like big eyes, big lips, big ears. But when I was little I was constantly being made fun of for having big eyes and that was awful.
"I used to come home crying, 'Why do I have big eyes?' And my parents were like, 'You're crazy!'"

It always bothers me when really gorgeous people complain about being ugly ducklings. It's like they're trying to make the rest of us feel better about our average looks.

Mila Kunis: Sex Scene With Natalie Portman ‘Wasn’t Done for Shock Value’

Mila Kunis displays some dazzling moves in Black Swan as a laid-back ballerina who’s the opposite of the uptight perfectionist played by Natalie Portman.

Both actresses were determined not to fake the dancing in the dark thriller. Kunis told Parade’s Jeanne Wolf what she went through to make it real. Plus, what it took to get through a shockingly explicit moment of on-screen passion with her co-star, not to mention going even further in her next film with Justin Timberlake.

She liked playing a free spirit.
“I appreciated her ability to separate her life from her career and kind of want to live life to the fullest. I think that can be healthy as opposed to being a perfectionist or a workaholic. I’m not very competitive, which is not to say I’m not driven because I am. I like to work because it’s selfishly fulfilling for me. I have fun. I’m proud of what I do and I push myself and challenge myself. But it has nothing to do with competing with anybody except myself.”

See exclusive photos of Mila Kunis

No pain, no gain.
“I tore a ligament the first month of rehearsals, and I hyper-extended my right shoulder four week before we started production. I had no idea what I was in for. You do ballet as a kid and you wear a tutu and you stand on stage and look cute and twirl. This is very different because you can’t fake it. You can’t just pretend you know what you’re doing. The training was the toughest thing I’ve ever done.”

Photos: Hollywood stars show off their dance moves

The torture of dancing on pointe.
“Toe shoes are a horrible invention, absolutely grotesque. I learned how to de-shank a shoe — to take out the wooden thing at the very bottom of it because it was crippling me. I couldn’t even walk straight.”

In bed with Natalie.
“We knew it was going to attract attention. We were just hoping that people would walk away after seeing the movie not just isolating in their memory that scene when we have sex. I think it’s important to the story. It wasn’t done for shock value, but we weren’t looking forward to it.”

Exclusive photos from our sexy shoot with Natalie Portman

And it wasn’t fun.
“I don’t think we were laughing between takes. I think we were like, ‘Let’s just get this over with.’ It’s uncomfortable doing a sex scene. It’s just bizarre. Luckily, we were friends, so we were able to get through it.”

Warning to her dad: More heavy breathing to come.
“Next is Friends with Benefits, which we wrapped two months ago. Justin Timberlake and I play friends who are in a relationship where they try to have casual sex without any emotional attachment. Justin and I have quite a few unclothed moments. But he made it easy for me by kidding around and keeping me laughing. I feel sorry for my dad though. If I’m not mistaken, he walked out during the sex scene in Black Swan. I just don’t think he wants to envision his daughter doing that kind of thing. I’m not sure if he’s going to be able to see Friends with Benefits. He’ll be leaving the theater a lot. I think I might have to ban him.”

Kunis got role through Skype

MILA KUNIS is quite a woman, but even she was surprised to pick up her standout film role without a formal audition.

The stunning actress landed a part in hit lesbian ballet thriller Black Swan by just having a handful of video meetings with director DARREN ARONOFSKY.

She said: "It was the first movie I didn't have to audition for. I was absolutely shocked. But I never questioned Darren about why he cast me. I didn't want him second-guessing it."
And director Aronofsky, who worked on the film's concept for 10 years, made his mind up right away after seeing Mila in Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

He said: "I just thought, Who is that girl? So charming and beautiful and sexy and smart and clever. There was so much going on."

Agreed.

Mila went on to pick up a Golden Globe nomination for her role in the flick, in which she plays dancer Lily.

But she's now taking a well deserved breather, picking and choosing the roles she wants to play.

She said: "I know people say this all the time, but it's true: I don't ever want to work for the sake of working. I was very lucky to have a show [TV hit That 70s Show] for eight years. Now I can sit back and think about what I want."

Black Swan's Mila Kunis is White Hot in LA Times Magazine

Mila Kunis gives a serious stare and a lot of leg on the cover of this month's Los Angeles Times Magazine. She took a nod from her Black Swan character for the ballet-inspired spread, which was photographed by Ruven Afanador.

Mila's currently riding the success of the film with multiple other honours, including a spot in Vanity Fair's Young Hollywood issue. Her movie with Justin Timberlake, Friends With Benefits, is up next and Mila talked to Leslie Gornstein about moving on from her TV career and making comedies. Here's more:

* On her career: "I was very lucky to have a show for eight years. Now I can sit back and think about what I want."
* On making comedies: "I love doing comedies. They’re just as hard, if not harder, to make work, compared with a drama. You work 17 hours a day, and you have to try to make things different and funny and relatable onscreen all at the same time."
* Black Swan director Darren Aronofksy on working with Mila: "She’ll try anything . . . [Mila is] very, very playful — really willing to experiment."
* Friends With Benefits director Will Gluck on Mila: "She's very smart about her movies. Her notes are very un-actorlike: Will this emotion work here, will this reaction work there — not typical minuscule notes about a line or something."

Makeup Mondays With Mario: Smokey Eyes For Dark Complexions

Celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic is answering your burning beauty questions!!! Every Monday, he will answer a beauty/skin care question as part of a weekly column on Spoiled Pretty, Makeup Mondays with Mario.

Hi Mario,

I love the soft, natural smokey eyes you do on Kim Kardashian but have trouble re-creating them on my dark skin (my complexion is closer to Gabrielle Union or Jessica White) - it always comes out too dark and muddy. Can you give me some ideas on color selection to best re-create a soft, smokey eye for my skin tone? And can I use Eye M Glam or will it be too light for me?

Thank You SO MUCH,
Niki

Niki,

Here's how you can easily rock soft smokey eyes. First start by evening out the lids a primer or concealer and set with powder. This step will prevent the muddy look you mentioned. Try a rich copper or deep bronze shadow (shimmery or satin finish) all over your lids below the crease. Blend that with a clean brush going up slightly above the crease. Using a small brush, sweep the same shadow along the lower lash line. Line the inner rim of eyes and the base of the lower lashes with a black pencil and also line the lids. Blend the pencil softly so there's no sharp lines. You want the black line to blend up into the copper shadow. Do the same with the bottom but this time blending downward into the shadow.

You can use Eye M Glam on your skin tone for sure as its a sheer highlighter. To polish the look, place some right on the inner corners of the eyes and a bit on the brow bone. Finish off with mascara on top and bottom.

Thanks for visiting Makeup Mondays With Mario!

xo,
Mario

Le Col Cashmere Giveaway!

I don't know what the weather is like in your neck of the woods – but these days, Philadelphia is pretty much indistinguishable from the Arctic tundra. It's the kind of cold where you pile on whatever is warm – no matter how frumpy dumpy it makes you look. Lucky for me (and my sense of style), I recently became acquainted with a cold weather accessory that is both toasty warm and tres chic!

Le Col Cashmere is an affordable luxury, made of 100% cashmere and finished by hand in a traditional French torsade pattern. The updated twist on the winter scarf provides even more comfort than the standard cold weather accessory due to its construction. The tube scarf’s seamless "pullover" style, as opposed to the standard wrap-around scarf, provides full coverage and protection. So whether you're riding the streets on your Vespa or simply out for an afternoon stroll, Le Col Cashmere's snood will keep you toasty warm on even the most blistering cold days.

"In addition to its practical sensibility, the product is non-gender specific and therefore appeals to both men and women who are looking to show off their personal sense of style during the winter months," explains Ruben Auszenkier, Le Col Cashmere co-founder and General Manager Europe.

The must-have style of the season is available in two equally comfortable and flattering silhouettes – the signature Le Col Cashmere snood and Le Grand Col Cashmere's extra long snood - and five gorgeous shades (I own the camel).

You can own one too because, this week, Spoiled Pretty is partnering with Le Col Cashmere and one reader will win a Le Col Cashmere snood in his/her choice of color!!!

Enter to win by leaving a message in the comments section. Make sure to include your email or another way for me to get in touch, just in case you get lucky!

Contest is open to U.S. residents. The giveaway ends at noon (EST) on Sunday, February 20, 2011. Good luck!

Makeup Mondays With Mario: Flawless Foundation

Celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic is answering your burning beauty questions!!! Every Monday, he will answer a beauty/skin care question as part of a weekly column on Spoiled Pretty, Makeup Mondays with Mario.

Hi Mario,

My questions are about foundation. First, when I’m buying a foundation, how do I make sure that I’m buying the right shade? Second, once I apply my foundation, how do I get the color to stay true? I ask this because sometimes my foundation will turn slightly orange after a few hours. Thanks!

-Lia

Hi Lia,

When chosing a foundation shade, it's important that you consider your skin shade on your face and neck. Test a few shades of foundation across your jawline and slightly onto the neck. Blend with a sponge and whichever shade looks most natural should be the right match.

Getting the color of your base to stay true is easy. Your face oils are what cause the base to turn orange so try to keep your skin matte by using blotting tissues throughout the day. You may also want to start your application using an anti-shine or matte primer, followed by foundation. Finish off by setting it all with a translucent colorless loose powder and voila! Perfection.

Thanks for visiting Makeup Mondays With Mario!

xo,
Mario

Valentine's Day Beauty Giveaway Sponsored by Stila and June Jacobs

Did you know that Valentine's Day is next week? Well, it is – a week from today, in fact. Just thought I'd remind you, in case that obnoxious red aisle at your local drugstore hadn't tipped you off already.

To celebrate Valentine's Day at Spoiled Pretty, I’m partnering with June Jacobs and Stila for a giveaway. Just think of me as Cupid – hooking up one lucky winner with some love-ly cosmetics:

June Jacobs Limited-Edition "Kiss In The Park" Lip Kit
Every true romance begins with a kiss. So treat your lips as well as you treat your skin with a lip facial trio that supports one of New York’s most romantic destinations, Central Park. To support her favorite place in New York City, June Jacobs has partnered with the Central Park Conservancy to create a Limited Edition version of her bestselling Lip Kit - "Kiss In The Park." The first step to perfecting your pucker is to apply the emollient lip exfoliation treatment which utilizes sugar granules to gently sweep away dead skin cells, leaving lips silky smooth. Next, the luxurious Lip Masque is applied to gently calm and nourish the lips. The last step, Lip Renewal is infused with shea butter, mango, aloe and ceramides to instantly provide exceptional and continual relief to dry, dehydrated and chapped lips. The end result is lips that have been rescued, refreshed and revitalized – ready for kissing.
Price: $60, available at JuneJacobs.com

Stila Make Me Blush Palette
This multi-color blush is inspired by Valentine's Day Conversation Hearts. The top layer is sprayed with the gold shine for visual and once dusted off with brush you are left with all over glow pressed powder that will add warmth, soft color, and sheer luminosity to cheeks and complexion. Great for all skin tones, the micro-fine formula is velvety and blendable and instantly enhances the complexion with a tint of pinks and corals. You look and feel radiant from within, just like when that someone special makes you blush.
Price: $14, available at stilacosmetics.com
