Makeup Mondays With Mario: Pores No More!

Celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic is answering your burning beauty questions!!! Every Monday, he will answer a beauty/skin care question as part of a weekly column on Spoiled Pretty, Makeup Mondays with Mario.

Hi Mario,

If you're reading this question and about to answer it - thank you, thank you, thank you! My problem is that I have HUGE pores. My pores are a big issue for me and I hate the way they make my skin look. Are there any skincare products or makeup that you can recommend that will shrink and/or conceal them? Thanks so much for your expert advice. I'm your biggest fan!

Love,
Holly

Hi Holly,

I've got three words for you - "Pores No More." Famed dermatologist Dr. Brandt created Pores No More products to help visibly reduce the size and appearance of large pores.

You can follow with your normal makeup routine or even try a product like Studio Secrets Professional Magic Perfecting Base by L'Oreal. Just apply with your finger to the T-zone and any areas with large pores. It will smooth out the skin's texture and fill in fine lines and pores for a more flawless makeup application.

Thanks for visiting Makeup Mondays with Mario!

Makeup Mondays With Mario: Fill In The Beauty Blanks

Celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic is answering your burning beauty questions!!! Every Monday, he will answer a beauty/skin care question as part of a weekly column on Spoiled Pretty, Makeup Mondays with Mario.

This week, it's my turn to ask a question or two...or six. To mix it up, I've asked Mario to play a game of Fill In The Beauty Blanks...

1) The first beauty product I ever bought was a Stila brush - #15, I think.
2) My favorite drugstore beauty product is L'Oreal Voluminous Mascara in Carbon Black.
3) Every woman should own Eye M Glam highlighter.
4) Splurge on foundation and save your money on lip gloss/lipstick.
5) Shu Uemura Rouge Unlimited Lipstick in RD 165 is a universally flattering red lipstick.
6) La Mer, beautyblender, Dior are my three favorite beauty brands
.

Makeup Mondays With Mario: How To Do Drugstore

Celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic is answering your burning beauty questions!!! Every Monday, he will answer a beauty/skin care question as part of a weekly column on Spoiled Pretty, Makeup Mondays with Mario.

Hi Mario,

I don't have a big budget for cosmetics, but it seems that most of the inexpensive products I buy don't look very good. Can you recommend some drugstore makeup that is comparable to department store makeup?

Thanks, Kourtney

Hi Kourtney,

When using drug store cosmetics, you should try switching up your technique and tools during application. An extra step or two should have you satisfied with the way your makeup looks. For example, a eyeshadow color that you love at the drugstore looks great in the package but when you bring it home and apply the color, it probably doesn't glide smoothly or evenly stick to your lids. In this case, make sure your lids are primed with a shadow base or a bit of your foundation/concealer and set them with loose powder. This will ensure a smooth and even application. Your brush should not be too "fluffy" unless you are blending so choose a shadow brush with shorter, firmer bristles and dab/press the shadow onto the lids a few times. Using a cream shadow first followed by a powder also works well and gives a richer look.

A tip for making inexpensive, hard liners easily glide on to give you nice pigment is to first heat them with a blow dryer or a lighter. You'd be surprised at how the texture of the pencil becomes rich and emollient. If you try this, please wait a few seconds before you apply the hot pencil to your face.

Drugstores do carry so many great makeup brands and products that are comparable to department store brands. L'Oreal True Match Foundation, Revlon lipstick, NYX shadows and blush and CoverGirl concealers are just a few of many, many good products that can be found in drugstores. Just like with inexpensive clothing or furniture, it takes more effort to make it look good but you learn so many tricks along the way.

Thanks for visiting Makeup Mondays with Mario!

Top 10 Bridal Beauty Tips

Today, Mr. Spoiled Pretty and I celebrate our third wedding anniversary. With our recent move and all of the craziness that's going on in our lives right now, we almost forgot. But after remembering, we booked reservations at Supper, an excellent restaurant in our new 'hood.

This year is particularly special, because we celebrate the occasion with our son. Though Westley isn't scheduled to make his grand entrance until August, he'll enjoy a delicious dinner.

In honor of my nuptials, I'm taking this opportunity to pass along some beauty knowledge to brides-to-be. Back in 2007, I stressed myself out something awful trying to make sure my makeup was perfection; I wish someone wiser had taken me under her wing and saved me some major frustration. So I'm hoping that this post will serve that purpose and help a new generation of brides vow to be beautiful on their wedding day.

Here are my top 10 tips:

1. Don't get too trendy with your makeup or hairstyle. You want to look like a knockout on your wedding day, but you should still look like you. Years from now, you don't want to look at your wedding photos and think, “Who is that?”

2. If you're planning a pre-wedding facial or similar treatment, make sure you schedule it at least a week before. The last thing you need to deal with is an allergic reaction or an extraction-happy esthetician that leaves your face a marked up mess days/hours before your nuptials.

3. If you can, hire someone to do your hair and makeup on your wedding day. I'm not doubting your abilities…you might be the second coming of Kevyn Aucoin, but having someone to help means that you'll have one (or two) less things to worry about on the day of. And it needn't cost a fortune, either. You don;t need to hire a celebrity makeup artist to look like supermodel. Find a local beauty school and ask if any of the students are available for special events. Or go to the mall and get a makeover at your favorite makeup counter. If the salesperson does a good job, ask him/her if she makes house calls. My longtime friend/mane man, Erik, did my hair at my parents' house…and then attended our wedding as a guest.

4. Whether you're paying someone to do your hair/makeup or you’re a DIY kind of bride, always do a trial run. And take photos – from different angles and in different lighting. You might love the reflection in the mirror, but the pictures might tell a different story. And better for you to figure out what works (and what doesn't) in the months/weeks leading up to your big day – when you actually have time and the means to fix problems.

5. Don't rush to remove your veil. If you decide to wear a veil on your wedding day, wear it for the entire day - from your walk down the aisle until the end of the reception. A veil is that one element that transforms you from a woman in a white dress into a bride. Looking back at my wedding photos, I wish I hadn't been in such a rush to take off my veil and show off my hair. I much prefer the photos of me wearing the veil; they have a much more romantic quality.

6. Invest in some waterproof mascara, even if you're not the emotional type. At some point, someone is going to make you cry and you'll be happy you dodged a Tammy Faye Baker bullet.

7. If your hair has behavioral issues, I would recommend not washing your hair on your wedding day. Freshly shampooed hair doesn't hold a style as well as second day hair. And if your hair has a serious case of ADD, invest in a can of Elnett.

8. If your skin is on the oily side and you're afraid of looking shiny in photos, make sure to have blot papers handy on your wedding day. Powder does cut down on shine, but it can also get cakey-looking and settle into lines. Blotting papers are a better bet. Or you can do like I do and just grab a bunch of Starbucks brown napkins next time you get a Frappuccino; those suckers work better than most blotting papers I've used – and when Starbucks charges you $4-5 for some coffee, milk and sugar, they owe you some damn napkins. So take a handful and put 'em in your purse.

9. Invest in good makeup primers to keep makeup from sliding off of your face. I'm partial to Laura Mercier Foundation Primer and Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion.

10. I wore Giorgio Armani Silk Lipstick topped with Armani Lip Shimmer on my wedding day (click here to find out what else I wore). I asked one of my bridesmaids to hold my gloss for me - but when I needed it for a mid-reception touch-up, she didn't know where it was. To this day, she still insists that I lost it. Um, as if! I would never misplace a brand new Armani lip gloss. Anyway...I digress. Though this was a minor snafu, I'm often reminded of my mistake when I look at my photos. My lips are almost the same color as my face, so in some of the pictures, my mouth kind of just disappears. It still irks me to this day. So do yourself a favor and use a lip stain (like CoverGirl Outlast Lipstains) before applying lipstick and/or lip gloss. And don't ask your flighty friends to hold nuthin'.

Drugstore Beauty Must Haves!

After a brief television hiatus, I'm back on the tube again...this time, dishing on my favorite drugstore beauty must haves.

We all know that it doesn't actually cost a million bucks to look like a million bucks. But there are thousands of skin/body care products and cosmetics at your local drugstore...and choosing what should go in your basket and what should stay on the shelf can be overwhelming.

So reporter (and fabulous style blogger) Lilliana Vazquez asked me to share my beauty expertise with Philadelphia's NBC10 viewers and name my top drugstore beauty buys. Some of my current faves include:

L'Oreal Paris Ideal Skin Genesis Complexion Equalizer Day/Night Cream, $19.99 (comparable to Clinique Even Better Skin Tone Correcting Moisturizer SPF 20, $42.50)

Revlon PhotoReady Makeup, $13.99 (comparable to Make Up For Ever HD Invisible Cover Foundation, $40)

CoverGirl LashBlast Fusion, $9.99 (comparable to Diorshow Mascara, $24)

Maybelline Shine Sensational Lip Gloss, $5.99 (compare to Lancome Juicy Tubes, $18)

Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips Custom Blush and Highlighter, $12.99 (compare to Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick, $38)

L'Oreal Studio Secrets Professional Magic Perfecting Base Is Great For Greasy Gals

And the award for Best New Primer for Greasy Gals goes to L'Oreal Studio Secrets Professional Magic Perfecting Base. I received a sample last month, and it was love at first swipe.

Don't be fooled by its putty-like texture. It applies like a dream, leaving skin so satiny soft that you'll wonder exactly how you lived your life before this product came into existence. The primer easily disguises pores and wrinkles, and imparts a matte finish. So if the summer heat and humidity turns your mug into an oil slick, you'd be a brainy beauty to invest in a jar of this pink magic.

L'Oreal Studio Secrets Professional Magic Perfecting Base is intended to be worn in tandem with your favorite tinted moisturizer or foundation. But if you're having a low-maintenance kind of day, just apply a little to bare skin and it gives you a you-but-better look.

The formula is 100% oil- and fragrance-free, non-comedogenic and non-acnegenic - so even the most sensitive skins should tolerate this product.

Just proof, once again, that it doesn't take a million bucks to look like, well, a million bucks. L'Oreal Studio Secrets Professional Magic Perfecting Base is this Recessionista's Fabuless Pick of the Week.

Makeup Mondays With Mario: Beautiful and Bronzed

Celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic is answering your burning beauty questions!!! Every Monday, he will answer a beauty/skin care question as part of a weekly column on Spoiled Pretty, Makeup Mondays with Mario.

Hi Mario!

I just have to say I love love love your work, it’s so flawless and beautiful! My problem is I am a latina with fair skin and I recently started bed tanning a bit, I really don't want to overdue it because of the damaging effect it has in the long run. So my question is what kind of self tanner can I use for my face and body? I've also seen some for daily use. What would you recommend?

Thank you very much!
-Ilsse

Ilsse,

The first thing you should do is stop tanning! There is nothing that will heal or correct the negative effects that tanning has on your skin. You may not see the damage today, but it will appear later in life. I am, however, a fan of self tanners and use them myself. Try L'oreal Paris Sublime Bronze ProPerfect Salon Airbrush Self-Tanning Mist. It's very easy to use yourself, comes out evenly and does not smell bad. If you prefer a creme or lotion, try the
St.Tropez tanning line which has unique products to help you look tan and healthy. Whichever products you choose to use, you should always exfolliate you skin prior to application, avoid too much product on the elbows, feet, knees and any area that tends to get blotchy. Also keep your toenails and fingernails covered in Vaseline when appyling self tanner, as they will stain the nails an unnatractive yellow shade of yellow. Moisturize with a non-oily moisturizer to preserve the color longer. It's alot of work keeping your face and body beautiful and bronzed but it's worth it.

Thanks for visiting Makeup Mondays with Mario!

Mario

Golden Globes Gorgeous 2010: Kate Hudson

Beauty Inspiration: "Golden Globes makeup is all about the dress. When I saw Kate in her
gorgeous white dress, I knew we had to go for a clean, sophisticated, pretty look - very Grace Kelly." -Makeup Artist Leslie Lopez

Beauty Tip: "I prepped Kate's skin with CHANEL Sublimage Fluid before applying her base, L'Oreal True Match Foundation in N-3. In the crease of her eyes I used the grey shade from the CHANEL Quadra Eye Shadow in Blue Celestes. I applied the lightest silvery white shade under the brow bone, as well as under the lash line. The inside of her eyes were lined with Almay black eye pencil, and I finished the eyes with CHANEL Inimitable Mascara in Noir. Finally, on her lips I used CHANEL Aqualumiere Sheer Colour Lipshine in Malta, a sheer subtle peach shade."

Five Ways To Sneak SPF Into Your Beauty Routine This Winter

Winter is almost upon us. By now, you’ve likely packed away your swimsuits, shorts and tank tops. But I hope that your sunscreen didn’t go into hibernation with your summer clothes.

UV radiation doesn’t take a vacation – and while not as intense in the wintertime, it still poses a threat. In fact, the reflection of the sun’s rays off of snow, sand, water, concrete and buildings can still cause damage to your skin.

Luckily for you, I’ve found five products that make it easy to sneak sun protection into your beauty routine:

Hissyfit Saving Face Anti-Aging Foundation provides flawless foundation coverage with a SPF 50+, broad spectrum protection from the sun’s damaging UVA/UVB rays. Water-resistant, Saving Face is perfect for protecting skin after exfoliation, dermabrasion or chemical peels. And it gets major props for its wide range of shades. Brown skinned beauties, rejoice!

L’Oreal Skin Genesis SPF 15 Lotion is one of the rare facial moisturizers I can use during the summer and winter. I love how my skin literally drinks it in. When I apply the lotion after exfoliating, better shield your eyes because my skin is positively luminescent.

My favorite bronzer is LORAC TANtalizer Baked Matte Satin Bronzer SPF15, which has a mineral-based, baked formula that goes on silky-smooth for a glow that lasts. It can be used wet or dry, depending on the intensity you desire, and is great for contouring and highlighting. It might just be the best bronzer I've ever used – and now that the summer glow has faded from your face, I suggest you invest in it too.

It’s Hissyfit to the rescue, again. Their Handy Work Anti-Aging Hand Cream is a luxuriously moisturizing cream that offers SPF 30+ UVA/UVB protection, and smells of orange and mint.

Carmex Moisture Plus Ultra Hydrating Lip Balm has nourishing emollients that penetrate to soothe, heal and prevent dry lips. It has SPF 15, but you’d never know because it doesn’t taste or smell sunscreeny. The satin gloss looks great by itself or as a final finish over your lip color.

This post is sponsored by Carmex Moisture Plus ultra hydrating lip balm. More than lip balm, learn Carmex secrets, tips, & ideas here.

Entourage Star Emmanuelle Chriqui in Women's Health

Align Center
With his soulful eyes and Cheshire grin, Adrian Grenier would be in contention for prettiest star of HBO's Entourage - if not for Emannuelle Chriqui. As Eric Murphy's on again off again gal pal, she sizzles up the small screen on Sunday nights.

In the July/August issue of Women's Health, Chriqui opens up to the mag about her exotic look, challenges she’s faced in her career, and imparts advice on how to embrace being different.

Embracing her uniqueness:
“There’s been a massive shift of consciousness. We have an African American president, there’s been a huge influx of Latin talent in mainstream music and film, and there’s a real audience for international films like Slumdog Millionaire. Guess what? The girl next door isn’t necessarily blonde and blue-eyed anymore. So I don’t feel like I need to morph into that All-American thing. Now it’s about accepting who you really are and being proud of that. When you have confidence that’s what becomes attractive to other people and makes them want to work with you and spend time with you.”

Emmanuelle found herself being passed over for roles that went to more conventional-looking actresses:
“There have been some incredible things that I’ve lost out on because I don’t fit the {all-American} mold. It can be frustrating.”

After filming Zohan, Chriqui tried to audition for another part and the producer wouldn’t see her:
“It was like, ‘NO – not the look we’re going for.’ Period.”

Scrutinizing her exotic appearance:
“I’ve thought to myself, ‘What hair color will make my hair look lighter but won’t look weird?’ or ‘Are these contacts I can wear to not come off quite as exotic as I am?”

Emmanuelle’s 7 Ways to be Totally Irresistible, Just Being YOU…
1. Don’t freak over so-called imperfections: “Never reveal your insecurities to a man, because nine times out of 10 they have no idea they even exist. Most guys are not as observant as women are.”

2. Let the real you shine through: "For the record: I wear makeup. All. The. Time. But I do it in a way that looks natural. My skin is blotchy, and I'm Mediterranean - I've got dark circles. So I need foundation and concealer. One thing I swear by is Armani Silk foundation. It offers coverage, but it breathes, so people never think I'm wearing makeup. For under my eyes, I use Touche Eclat by Yves Saint Laurent, which I love because it's moisturizing and creamy and blends into my skin without getting cakey. I also wear a bronzer - Cargo and Nars have great sun-kissed colors - just to give a little depth to my cheeks."

3. Play up your best feature: "I would say that my favorite part of my face is my eyes. I have very long lashes, but they're not thick, so when I apply mascara - I love L'Oreal Voluminous - suddenly my eyes are transformed. It's cool. I've also learned a few eye makeup tricks. For example, highlight your brow bone to give your eyes a more wide-open look. Also, as you're applying mascara, twirl the brush - from the root [to the ends] - so the color covers the whole lash for a fuller look."

4. Find a good role model: "To me, natural beauty means having a real sense of confidence. I just think that there is something so incredibly sexy about a woman who takes care of herself and doesn't try to bend to be something she's not, like Robin Wright Penn, Meryl Streep, and Diane Lane. And Kate Winslet - I mean, my God! She's gotten even more beautiful with age!"

5. Develop your own sense of style: "Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Moss both have great personal style. So does Katie Holmes. It's risky, but it's a statement and I like that. In elementary school I was always transforming stuff, like turning the top of [a pair of pantyhose] into a bandeau. It was my way of expressing myself. Now my look is tomboy meets hippie chic. A great pair of jeans, a T-shirt, hoop earrings, and a pair of boots or sandals, and I'm good to go."

“You have to be comfortable in what you're wearing, because it shows. I know what fits my body and I'm crazy particular about that. Something I've been living in: my AG jeans. They're tight, boot-leg, low-waisted and holey. You can wear them dressed up or dressed down, with running shoes or sandals, whatever. Sometimes I follow trends, like when the skinny-jeans craze was going on, but usually I just do what feels good to me. I'm not afraid when it comes to fashion. If I love the way something looks - whether it's ethnic, Goth, or ultra sexy - I'm like, let's do this!"

6. Express yourself with accessories: "I love David Yurman rings, but overall, I'm much more into street jewelry. I find the best bangles and the coolest, most gigantic ornate earrings - things that you just don't see just anywhere else. I'm very even-handed when I jewel myself up. I'll either wear a serious pair of earrings or a ton of bangles, but not both. Less is more."

7. Be brave in your beliefs: "My spirituality happens to be a big part of my life. For example, I believe that we're constantly surrounded by energy; things we don't see that guide us. So I go to a healer who uses, among other things, essential oils to align my chakras [centers of energy, according to Indian medicine]. I think if you are open to this, it can be transformative; I've actually seen it in my own life. Of course, here [in California], this kind of stuff isn't considered all that weird. Still, I've had somebody very close to me belittle my journey. It was really difficult because I felt as though they were rejecting a really big part of me - but, you know, it didn't make me waver for a moment."

Cameron Diaz Did NOT Pull A Britney For My Sister's Keeper

In her latest film, My Sister's Keeper, Cameron Diaz plays the mother of a girl battling leukemia. In a particularly poignant scene, her character shaves her locks in an act of solidarity with her eldest daughter. But don't be fooled. Cammie didn't actually pull a Britney. It was just a wig cap and some clever movie magic.

She tells Metro newspaper, "If I shaved my head and my hair was this long right now, they would have me in a lab somewhere. Kerastase or L'Oreal would have already taken me somewhere."

Kim Kardashian's Maxim Hot 100 Makeup

For last month's Maxim Hot 100 party, Kim Kardashian rocked gorge emerald eyes. On his blog, Kim's makeup artist, Mario Dedivanovic, posts about the products he used to create the look.

He writes:

Hey guys… For the Maxim Hot 100 event, Kim wore an all while dress and the hair was pulled back so I definitely wanted to use a little bit of color on her eyes and green is my favorite color. I really like how this look came out on her and it photographed beautifully. When using a color on the eyes, keep the cheeks and lips soft and pretty. Here’s how to get the face…

Skin - Mat Velvet + Matifying Foundation by Make Up For Ever in Neutral Beige. GIELLA concealer in #2. Set the face and under the eyes with Make Up For Ever HD translucent powder.

Eyes - Golden Olive Pigment by MAC on lids. Humid Eye Shadow by MAC in the crease and blended on the lower lashline. Electric Edge Liquid Eyeliner Marker Pen by Calvin Klein in Electric Black on the upper lid and winged out a little on the outer corner. GIELLA Dazzle Eye Pencil on the inner corners (tear ducts) and on the inner rim of the eye. Two coats of L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara in Carbon Black, top and bottom lashes.

Cheeks - Rock & Republic Contrived Pressed Blush in Call Me on the apples of the cheeks. Apply Summer Affair Bronzing Powder by Calvin Klein framing the face lightly.

Lips - No lip liner. Just a clear gloss ;) Let me know how it comes out if you try it!

Fashion School Is In Session: Interview With Sydne Summer

Everybody puts their pants on one leg at a time. But while most of us are just throwing on an old pair of faded Levi’s and t-shirt, only a select few would think to pair a $23 skinny white jean with a BCBG leather jacket, Forever 21 lace camisole, Manolo Blahnik gladiator sandals, and assorted silver and black bracelets.

Such is the gift of Los Angeles based Fashion Editor, blogger and TV fashion commentator, Sydne Summer. On the Style Network’s website, Mystyle.com, Sydne deconstructs star style, advises real women on how to cop runway and red carpet trends, and interviews style icons. Sydne’s own blog, ThinkThruFashion, provides how-to solutions, fashion and beauty tips, trend breakdowns and pictorial inspiration of clothes on real people.

Recently, I had the opportunity to pick Sydne’s brain and learn some tricks of the trade. If, like me, you’re looking to up your style ante - read on. Sydne’s taking us to fashion school...

SP: When did you first fall in love with fashion?
SS: I can’t pinpoint one exact moment because I have so many childhood memories that involved fashion. I grew up in the 80s and I used to stage photo shoots in my backyard dressed in neon shirts over biker shorts with my hair parted as far to the side as possible. During a family holiday one year, I think I was about seven, I made my younger cousin produce a fashion show while the adults were having cocktails. We made a royal mess in my grandmother’s closet trying on her silk printed tunics and piles of costume jewelry. Then I charged everyone a nickel so they could see us model our creations. And I don’t know when I was first given my dress-up chest but I don’t remember every not having it. Whenever I had a playdate we’d immediately dig in to the box of elbow length gloves, silk pajama gowns and rhinestone shoes and prance around thinking we were Claudia Schiffer.

SP: What was your first big break in fashion?
SS:
In college I was interning for Boston Magazine Publications. My editor was planning an event for Elegant Weddings to shows Boston brides how to create a New England-style wedding. I had to research New England based brands and have them ship us samples to use during the event. My editor was really pleased by the assortment of clothing, jewelry and party favors I came up with. She then trusted me to handle bigger projects, which was a great learning experience.

SP: What does it take to succeed in fashion?
SS: To make it in fashion in general, I think you need to study. Not study in the sense of cramming for a law exam but studying everything and anything about fashion. During fashion week, if I can’t make it to the shows I spend hours and hours on Style.com, analyzing each piece and writing down what I like and don’t like about the collection. When I’m out to lunch at the farmers market, I study what people are wearing to observe what works and what doesn’t work on different body types. I’m constantly reading up about designers, pouring over every fashion magazine and just talking to regular people about what they think about the latest trends or what so-and-so was wearing. You just need to absorb everything around you and of course, it doesn’t hurt to have the innate eye for style.

SP: What is your style philosophy?
SS:
I think the most important thing is to dress for your body type. It doesn’t matter how much you love a trend. If it’s not right for you, you shouldn’t wear it. I have an hourglass shape, so even though I loved the dropped waists that were in style about two years ago I resisted. I knew they wouldn’t look good on me so I admired from afar as my more narrow shaped friends strutted around in the flapper style dresses.

I’m also big on mixing high and low, something I did way before Michelle Obama came along in her J. Crew and Lanvin combos. I splurge on shoes, two handbags a year and dresses I know I’ll wear season after season. Then I head to Forever 21 and stock up on all the trendy stuff I’m loving at that moment—but might get sick of in a few months.

SP: What is the most treasured item in your closet?
SS:
My father passed away when I younger so on my 21st birthday my mother made a necklace using the diamond from her engagement ring my father gave her. She set it on a platinum strand with floating diamonds so it would be a present from both of them on my birthday.

SP: If you could spend the day with one fashion icon (living or deceased), who would it be and what would you do?
SS:
I’d love to spend the day with Christian Dior. His New Look is perhaps one of my favorite fashions of all time. I’d spend a day with him in Paris and go to my favorite museum, Musee d’Orsay. Dior started in art before becoming a fashion icon. Then we would go to his house and he would create a dress for me that would make me look like Dita von Teese. We’d go out later in the evening and talk about his genius ideas over glasses of champagne.

SP: What makes a woman 'stylish?'
SS:
Confidence. I know everyone says this but that’s because it’s true. I think I started gaining this confidence after I stopped comparing myself to other people. I grew up in Miami then moved to Los Angeles as a teenager so I’ve always been around beautiful women with great style. But over the years, I developed my own style and once you start becoming comfortable with your body and your sense of fashion it shows in the way you carry yourself. People would rather look at a woman standing tall and smiling in a Kmart dress than a pouty girl sulking in the corner in couture.

SP: Who are some of your favorite designers of all time?
SS:
Missoni for prints, Dolce & Gabbana when I want to feel sexy, Chanel for handbags that I can’t afford, Rebecca Taylor and Catherine Malandrino for feminine pieces and Jimmy Choo for classic shoes.

But as much as I love designer pieces, my favorite thing is to mix them with inexpensive finds. I do that in my blog on a daily basis. It’s fun to put an outfit together and have people guess which piece cost $300 and which cost $30. Their guesses are often incorrect, which just goes to show, you don’t need designer good to look good.

SP: Which trends will be big this summer?
SS: Rompers are huge, which I’m super excited about because I never bought one last summer and I’m a big fan of jumpsuits. Cutouts are popular on clothing and bathing suits. Also a big bathing suit trend is the one shoulder, which we know is extremely popular for dresses as well. Maxi dresses are everywhere, I especially like them paired with a bib necklace, another trend for spring and summer. As people get more tan, they’re going to start wearing one of the hottest colors this season: bright pink. And as we’ve seen on Rihanna, Lindsay Lohan, Victoria Beckham and just about every other celebrity, denim is distressed. Plus, the boyfriend jean is still going strong.

SP: Which trend(s) do you wish would die?
SS: I hate over-the-knee boots. I’ve seen maybe one person pull this look off: Diane Kruger in Tommy Hilfiger. But the majority of time, the thigh high boots just look like Pretty Woman, pre-Julia Roberts’ classy makeover. Then there is the harem pant that just won’t seem to go away. They’re still popular for summer, which means we’re going to see plenty more baggy crotches on the red carpet.

SP: Current handbag obsessions?
SS: I am absolutely obsessed with Valentino’s spring collection. Of course, I can’t afford even a fraction of any of the handbags but I could sit and stare at the floral masterpieces all day. They truly look like pieces of art. Just look at this one!

SP: Which celebrities would you love to style and why?
SS: Anne Hathaway. I love feminine, elegant pieces and I can’t think of any current star who looks better in them than Anne. Recently she’s tried to look edgy, wearing suits and leather but to me, she looks best as a classic beauty. But truthfully, I’d rather style women that really need help, rather than those that have Marc Jacobs on speed dial. I get more enjoyment out of helping a friend realize how amazing her body when she has the right clothing.

SP: Where are your favorite places to shop?
SS:
I recently got in to the whole vintage thing and even if I don’t buy anything, I have a blast shopping at thrift stores. My favorite one in L.A. is Jet Rag. I got this 80s velvet dress, cut off the skirt and now it looks just like a Balmain top, shoulder pads and all. I can’t wait to wear it with jeans this fall. For trendy items, I always go to Forever 21. And for my splurges I wait until Saks has their huge sales and stock up on everything I’ve been coveting online.

SP: What tips do you have for women who want star style on a budget?
SS:
Don’t try to copy a star from head to toe. If Beyonce is wearing Balmain and you try to find the exact same $11, 000 jacket for $11 you’ll just look like a cheaper version of Beyonce. In my blog, I always recommend to take inspiration from celebrity style instead of copying it. Figure out what you like about their style and find ways to make it your own. Earlier this year I really liked Cameron Diaz’s all-American look. But I didn’t try to find an exact replica of her striped Michael Kors dress. Instead I thought about what it was I liked about her style and kept that in mind when I went shopping. Things always look more expensive when they’re original—or at least when they’re styled in a creative way.

SP: Can you share some figure-slimming fashion tips?
SS:
1) Create the illusion of long legs by wearing shoes that match your skin color.
2) Show off your best feature. Mine is my waist, so I’m always cinching everything with belts. My friend has the hottest legs, so you’ll usually find her hiding her stomach with a billowy top and showing off her gams in a mini. My mother has amazing shoulders, so she always looks thinner when she wears a shell or halter.
3) Wear monochromatic outfits. If you wear all black, navy, brown, etc, it will create the illusion of a longer and leaner figure.
4) And if all else fails throw on some statement jewelry. If you have sparkly earrings or a unique necklace, nobody will notice you’re having a fat day.

SP: What are three fashion accessories every woman should own?
SS:

1) Black pumps: They add instant sex appeal and never go out of style.
2) A bright or metallic clutch: It makes sure a LBD isn’t boring and dresses up a pair of jeans.
3) A tan leather carryall: If I could only have one bag, it would be my cognac Foley + Corinna hobo. I can wear it with black, brown or navy and the more worn the leather gets, the better the bag looks.

SP: What products are staples in your makeup bag?
SS: Mascara is a must. It’s an instant pick me up when I haven’t slept. I switch on and off between L’Oreal Telescopic Mascara and Stila Convertible Mascara. For lips, I’ve been carrying around a tub of Rosebud Salve since my freshman year of college. But recently I’m addicted to C.O. Bigelow Mint Lip Tint Gloss. The coral has just a touch of color and the minty flavor is refreshing. I also need a bronzer. Whenever I’m laying out on the beach I always cover my face with a towel or wife beater. So my face obviously is just a tad lighter than my body. Bare Escentuals A Little Sun is great because it gives me a natural glow. I start on my cheekbones then lightly dust the rest of my face.
