New York Fashion Week, Fall 2010: Funky, Chunky Haircolor

Backstage at New York Fashion Week, my girl Megan McIntyre (from Daily Makeover) recognized an emerging trend for fall 2010: funky, chunky haircolor.

"Looks like it’s time to break out the Manic Panic. The big beauty trend for hair at Fashion Week was bright, chunky streaks of color that brought to mind punk-inspired street style circa 1996. At the Cynthia Rowley Fall 2010 fashion show, Eva Scrivo for Wella Professionals custom colored hair extensions in shades of emerald, lapis, amethyst, navy and turquoise to replicate the rich jewel tones present in the collection. Each hair extension was completely saturated with professional salon haircolor and then woven into the hair and styled, creating an element of surprise and intrigue when models hit the runway.

Super stylist Ted Gibson for beauty.com went for a version of the trend that was a little easier to DIY at the Vena Cava Fall 2010 fashion show (shown left). He used Streekers to color hair extensions in shades of hot pink, purple and green, then pulled them back into the models' slightly mussed ponytails to give a "downtown, cool feel," to the otherwise equestrian look.

We think this is one trend that just might hit the trifecta of translating in all three worlds: runway, red carpet and real world. This is the second season funky color has been featured at Fashion Week (the girls at the Spring 2010 Proenza Schouler fashion show rocked lovely lilac streaks) and Lady Gaga recently caused a stir at the Grammys with her own spin on the Crayola color trend. Adding a bright streak of color to your coif is an easy way to add a hip edge to your regularly scheduled hairstyle without a huge commitment. Now all you really have to decide is which happy hue you want to adorn your hair with."

Kate Gosselin's New Extensions!

My mane man Ted Gibson is unbeweavable. Just look what he's done to Kate Gosselin! Once mocked for her chickenbutt hairstyle, she now looks - dare I say - pretty?

Last week, it was all Ted & Kate plus hundreds of tracks. Ted spent 20 hours meticulously adding dozens of extensions to Kate's hair.

"Kate was an absolute sweetheart, I loved her," says Gibson, who also appears on the TLC show What Not To Wear. While he knew that transforming the look that launched a thousand Halloween wigs would be a challenge, Gibson reveals it was the super-short, spiky hair in the back of Kate's notorious former hairstyle that proved most daunting. "Bonding extensions to those little hairs really took time. But in all those hours, she didn’t complain once. She was so open to whatever I suggested, and willing to try just about anything." Well, with one notable exception: At first, Gibson reports, Kate was reluctant to let go of the thick, jaw-length shock of hair in the front of her face in favor of bangs. "She wasn't sure about bangs," says Gibson, "But I find many women have that one thing they're afraid to let go of, that one 'security blanket' part of their look, whether it's a fear of going shorter or darker or something. But once they finally let go and embrace the change, they always love it."

"It's good to have hair again," Gosselin says. "I know this will be more upkeep than my old look, but I'm ready for it. I'm just grateful I don't have to go through the awkward growing-out process of short hair. I get criticized for everything I do enough as it is!"

Ashley Greene's Sherlock Holmes Premiere Hairstyle

Celebrity hairstylist Ted Gibson styled Ashley Greene's hair for the NYC premiere of Sherlock Holmes. Here are Ted's expert tips and inspiration for how to get the look:

"Start off on wet hair and use Build It Blow Drying Agent and Hairsheet Styling to achieve volume and texture. After blow drying hair straight, use a large barrel curling iron to add movement, texture and shine. To finish off, pull hair back into a chignon using Tame It Shine Lotion and to hold it all in place, spray with Beautiful Hold Hairspray. We went with a more sophisticated look since the dress was a little below knee length and more demure, cocktail style. I wanted to be able to show off her beautiful face and fantastic neck by putting emphasis on these features with hair being a huge accent to the look."

New York Fashion Week: Lela Rose, Spring 2010

The inspiration for the makeup at the Lela Rose New York Fashion Week Spring 2010 show was Venice Beach. "The Lela Rose girl has been on the beach all day," said Sarah Lucero, Key Makeup artist for Stila/Beauty.com. "At the end of the day, she grabs her towel and heads out for dinner. So she needs a look to play up her sun kissed tan."

To create the look, Sarah used evened out models’ complexions and gave them a "clean, healthy glow" with Stila Sheer Cover Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15. Stila Convertible Color in Camelia, Eye Shadow Duo in Fandango and Cobalt Smudge Pot were applied to eyes. Sarah gave cheeks a little color using Stila Pomegranate Crush Lip & Cheek Stain. Camelia Convertible Color did double duty on the lips. Finally, lashes were inked up with Major Lash Mascara in Black.

When I asked Sarah to recommend one Stila product that every woman should invest in, she quickly answered Stila’s soon-to-be-released One Step Makeup - which is primer, foundation and concealer (oh my!) all in one fantabulous formula.

Sarah touches up Lela's makeup.

Next, I stopped by Ted Gibson’s station to inquire about the hair, and was surprised at what I saw. Since I started covering New York Fashion Week four seasons ago, Ted has been the Head Stylist at Lela Rose - and their collaborations typically yield sophisticated, polished hair. Not this year. "This season, the hair is an interesting departure from what we usually do," Ted said. Inspired by the beachy theme, and the collection’s wave details, he created a slightly messy mane. First, he sprayed hair with Build It Blow Drying Agent. Then he twisted small sections of hair before blasting them with a blow dryer. After repeating this process all over the head, Ted gathered hair in a ponytail and secured with an elastic. The pony was then back-brushed to give it volume and set using Beautiful Hold Hairspray. "This look is easy to replicate and is very wearable," he said. "If you’re a little more adventurous, leave the hair down."

A beachy, soft, nude nail - courtesy of Deborah Lippmann - complimented Lela’s collection. Lippmann Long Wearing Nail Lacquer in Fashion, an opaque beige - is a "modern take on the old-school matchy match mani/pedi," Deborah explained. "The color extends the skin, and you can imagine that toenails adorned in this color would just disappear in the sand."

It’s not often that I have a tête-à-tête with a nail authority, so I took the opportunity to ask Deborah about emerging trends and nail don’ts. She officially pronounced French manicures and pedicures as DEAD, noting that they should have disappeared along with the Betamax. "The French manicure is dated and uninspired. Many women tell me that they like a French manicure because they’re looking for a natural look. Problem is that no one has a white, white tip. Opaque beiges and tans are the new way to wear a neutral nail. I also love that these opaque nudes can do what pale, sheer pinks can’t: they cover imperfections better, result in less streaks, and make fingers look longer and leaner."

New York Fashion Week: Lela Rose, Fall 2009

For her Fall 2009 collection, Lela Rose drew inspiration from the rainforest - and the creepy crawlies that call it home. To help transform the models into chic, tropics-trekking entomologists, Lela enlisted the help of two of the biggest names in the beauty business.

Celebrity makeup artist Tina Turnbow (for Beauty.com) used products from Stila Cosmetics to reinforce the rainforest theme. Tina prepped the skin with Sheer Color Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15, Perfecting Concealer and Sheer Pressed Powder.

"The skin is fresh and dewy, not dead and matte," Tina explained. "I'm so excited to have the skin be healthy and shiny and glowing."

When I asked if dewy skin was an emerging trend for Fall, Tina confessed that she's ready to see the skin again. "I love the idea of sheen. I love seeing the skin, and powder usually takes that away. This morning, we're only applying powder to the t-zone."

Models' lids were painted with gold and green shadows from the Precious Pearl Palette and lined in Kajal Eye Liner (in Emerald and Pearl) along with Stila Smudge Pot in Jade - to mimic the the "iridescent, pearlescent shell of a beetle."

Cheeks were earthily flushed, using Convertible Color in Camellia and pouts glossed with Lip Glaze in Praline. Eyeshadow in Constellation and Venus (new shades) were brushed over brows and high on the cheekbones to give the face definition and impart a jungle-like wetness to the look.

I wasn't surprised to see mane magician Ted Gibson backstage, as he and Lela love to collaborate. For the past two seasons, I have chatted with Ted backstage at Lela Rose - and he always serves up something fierce.

Every fashion week, I am amazed by his conceptual (yet accessible) hairstyles...and this season's coiffure made me heart Ted all the more.

While Tina Turnbow was inspired by the beetle, Ted found his muse in Odonata - aka the dragonfly.

To create the insect-inspired do, Ted created a center part, then swept hair back into a "youthful ponytail." The voluminous crown was created using Build It. Tame It Shine Lotion smoothed the hair and calmed flyaways. The ponytail was coiled and blasted with heat from a hair dryer (air concentrator nozzle on), to give the hair texture.

Finally, the twisted tail was set with Beautiful Hold Hairspray, which smells so wondorous that you want to spray it on - whether or not your hair needs help staying put.

Blowout at Ted Gibson Salon Blows My Mind!

Yesterday morning after arriving in NYC for Fashion Week and dropping my bags off at the hotel, I high-tailed it to the Ted Gibson Salon on 5th Avenue.

Jason Backe, who recently dyed my hair to the most gorge hot chocolate hue, arranged for Amber and me to get our tresses blown out. Vincenza, before shampooing me with Ted Gibson Clarity Color Shampoo (which smells DIVINE, by the by), was shocked by the softness of my hair. She was even more astounded when I told her it was thanks to Nice 'N Easy ColorSeal Conditioning Gloss.

Laisam rubbed a Ted Gibson Hair Sheet on my towel-dried hair to rejuvinate my locks and protect against UV rays and environmental damage, then she blowed out my hair to perfection. While Laisam skillfully styled my hair, she entertained me with funny stories about her mom - whose crazy antics remind me a lot of Mama Spoiled Pretty.

Before Laisam sent me on my way, to grace New York with my bomb blowout, she rubbed a little shine serum on my hair to make it shine like the top of the Chrystler building. This product isn't yet on shelves, as Ted is still testing it...but Laisam has a great pet name for it; she calls it "crack juice" because once you use it, it becomes an addiction.

Once you turn crack, you never turn back.
